Who Am I?

Who am I?
I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half of the things you do you might as well turn over to me and I will do them – quickly and correctly. I am easily managed – you must be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically. I am the servant of great people, and alas, of all failures as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures. I am not a machine though I work with the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a person.
You may run me for profit or run me for ruin – it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. Who am I?
I am Habit
Are your habits lifting you up or holding you back?
I was talking to a group of brick layers the other day, via zoom, they’re in the Hunter Valley (and I’m on the Gold Coast).
Now bricklayers are a tough crowd for a Strategic Bookkeeper. I needed to rally them to help me help their boss (my client) solve a problem. I’d already worked out they were a great team. The owner, Marty, cultivates “great production teams”. So I knew they could help us solve this problem & tell me more about what the business needs to thrive.
The problem I was trying to solve is that “everyone calls the owner for everything”. I mean 80 plus calls a day & almost all of them should be directed to someone else.
This problem has led to the owner being “stuck in the grind” and 100% reactive, unable to do the proactive work needed to make the transformation from business to Thriving Lifestyle Business (and spend more time with his kids).
But holding the attention of brickees at 3.45pm is hard!
Anyway, I knew that at the core of the solution was forming new habits. For the owner & the team. And so, to grab their attention & add relevance I started with the “who am I riddle”. The winner would get a $50 voucher to spend on beer or, if no one could guess, I’d send the whole team one voucher to share on after work drinks.
While no one guessed, they got the gist and told me what they thought the business needed to thrive and it was amazing.
As a Strategic Bookkeeper & Thriving Lifestyle Business coach, here’s how I work with clients:
As you’ll see, as well as work around the numbers & operations, I work around habits (and mindset).
These are all the things you need to “be” to have the success you’re after.
