It’s widely recognised that habits and mindset play a major role in our success both personally and professionally.

While a great habit can make you, a bad habit can break you, read more on that here.

For now, let’s focus on the fundamentals of building these great habits.

To build great habits you need to get out of your comfort zone, also known as the Monkey Brain. And into the proactive mode also known as the Empire Builder Brain.

The concept is fairly simple and I’ve got some great empire builder brain exercises that you can do to start moving from reactive technician to proactive professional and really kick your goals in business. I’ll keep this fairly short and sweet.

And if you want to dive deeper, you can always book a free strategy call with me here.

“Primal brain” is fight or flight. It’s simply how we react to danger.

Monkey brain is “autopilot”. It’s how we operate, day to day without really thinking too much. It’s also in reactive mode.

Think of “monkey brain” as reacting to what’s around you.

  1. The kids sing out, you react

  2. The phone rings, you react

  3. The email dings, You react

  4. The social media notification dings, you react.

Empire Builder brain, on the other hand, is proactive mode. It’s virtually the opposite of the monkey brain. And it requires us to stop reacting and start taking control of our time.

An example of how we use our empire builder brain is planning before doing.

In monkey brain,  you might start checking your emails first thing in the morning. Checking your emails first thing in the morning is simply a habit that you’ve formed to react to whatever is coming at you.

In contrast, an Empire Builder brain would be having a daily planner, spending the first part of the day planning and attending to emails at a time when it suits your schedule which would usually be around lunchtime.  In fact, there’s a science to that which you can read about in Daniel Pink’s book, the science of when.

Or, if you’re like me, you’ll use the blinklist app & get the highlights.

Training your empire builder brain is key to creating the seven habits for success in today’s modern business world.

The foundation of the empire builder brain is being proactive which is one of the 7 habits. And if you’re proactive, you’ll naturally start planning, goal setting and you’ll get more organised.

When I work my clients around forming these habits we start with an exercise to build their empire builder brain.  And it starts with the 3 A’s to change.

  1. Awareness

  2. Acceptance

  3. Action

So the first thing to do is enter the awareness zone

  1. Become aware of how you’re reacting and using your monkey brain.

  2. When you are in reactive mode, think about this “What would have happened if I did not react, if I had attended to that task, call, notification, request in a more planned way?”

  3. Notice the things that could have been left until later

Once you’re aware of sitting in monkey brain & you accept that actually, the business won’t fall apart if I become a proactive planner, then you’re ready to take action.

And action is around planning your week & your day like using Kanban boards for productivity and more.

If you’d like more tools to optimise your business, profit & cash here’s 3 that you can use right now
